Can Fibre Affect Your Mood? How the Gut-Brain Axis Works
- The gut and brain communicate both ways through the gut-brain axis. This runs along the vagus nerve, hormones, the immune system, and compounds produced by gut microbes.
- Fibre feeds the microbes that produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Acetate, propionate, and butyrate are among the most studied compounds in gut-brain signalling.
- Higher fibre intake is linked with better mood. Observational studies associate more fibre with lower odds of depression and anxiety, in adults and in children and adolescents.
- Fibre is a low-risk part of a bigger picture. It is not a mental health treatment, but because it is low-risk and supports gut health either way, it can be a sensible habit to prioritise.
Can fibre affect your mood? The honest answer is: possibly, but not the way a quick headline suggests. Your gut and brain are in constant two-way communication through the gut-brain axis, and fibre feeds the microbes that help run it. Studies consistently link higher fibre intake with better mood and lower odds of depression and anxiety. But most of that evidence is observational, and clinical trials have not yet shown that fibre supplements treat these conditions. So fibre is not a mental health treatment. It is one supportive part of a much bigger picture.
What is the gut-brain connection?
"We are what we eat" is only half the story. The human body is not a simple "energy in, energy out" equation. You can eat plenty of calories and still feel flat, foggy, or low. That is partly because the gut does far more than digest food: it is in near-constant, two-way communication with the brain through a system known as the gut-brain axis.¹
This conversation travels along several routes at once. The vagus nerve acts as a direct line between the gut and the brain, carrying signals in both directions. The gut also communicates chemically, through hormones, through the immune system and inflammatory signalling, and through the body's stress-response system (the HPA axis), which ties the state of your gut to how you handle stress.¹
Your gut microbes sit at the centre of this. They help produce and regulate a range of signalling molecules, including neurotransmitters and, strikingly, a large majority of the body's serotonin is made in the gut rather than the brain. It is tempting to leap from that fact to "gut health controls your mood," but the honest picture is more careful: most gut-produced serotonin works locally, on digestion and gut movement, and within gut-brain signalling, it does not simply cross into the brain to set your mood. What the gut shapes is the wider signalling environment, not a single mood dial.¹

How does fibre fit into the gut-brain axis?
Dietary fibre is the part of plant food your body does not fully digest, so it is not "energy" in the usual sense. Instead, certain fibres are fermented by gut microbes into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs): acetate, propionate, and butyrate, which are being studied for their roles in inflammation, gut-barrier function, immune regulation, appetite, metabolic health, and gut-brain signalling.1,2 We explain how these gut foundations connect to inflammation here.
So fibre is not just about "keeping things moving." By feeding the microbes that produce these signalling compounds, it may help support the wider systems that influence how we feel day to day.
Can fibre really affect your mood?
This is where it is important to be honest, because it is also where a lot of health content overclaims. A growing body of research does link fibre intake with mental wellbeing. A systematic review and meta-analysis in Nutritional Neuroscience reported that higher total dietary fibre intake was associated with lower odds of depression in adults and adolescents.3 That is genuinely encouraging.
But association is not proof of cause. A more recent systematic review and meta-analysis in Nutrition Reviews made the distinction clearly: observational studies generally linked higher fibre intake with better depression and anxiety outcomes, yet current randomised controlled trials did not show that fibre supplementation improves depression or anxiety.4
In other words, people who eat more fibre tend to have better mental wellbeing, but we cannot yet say that taking more fibre will treat these conditions on its own. What we can say is that the link is real and promising, fibre is low-risk, and getting enough of it supports your gut either way, which makes it a sensible thing to prioritise while the science continues to catch up.
Does this apply to children and teenagers too?
The pattern repeats in younger populations. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in Food & Function found that, in observational studies, higher fibre intake in children and adolescents was associated with lower odds of depressive symptoms, but intervention studies did not show clear improvements in anxiety, stress, memory, or attention, meaning stronger human trials are still needed.5

Why gut discomfort and low mood often go together
The gut-brain connection becomes especially relevant when digestive discomfort and mood overlap. A scoping review of fibre-related dietary interventions in adults with irritable bowel syndrome highlighted that gut microbiota, sleep, and mental health may be connected, while also noting that stronger studies are needed to understand these relationships properly.6
This does not mean fibre can solve every gut or mood concern. But it is a reminder that digestion, sleep, stress, and emotional wellbeing are more connected than we often realise, and that looking after one may help support the others.
Fibre is never the whole answer. When your mental health is struggling, sleep, movement, therapy, and proper medical care matter far more, and no food can replace them. But fibre is one low-risk, everyday habit that supports a real part of the picture, and it happens to be one of the simplest to actually improve.
