Fibre as a Psychobiotic? What Does This Mean?

What is psychobiotic?
- A psychobiotic targets the gut microbiome to influence mood or stress. It can be a probiotic, prebiotic, synbiotic, postbiotic, or certain dietary fibres.
- Fibre qualifies because it feeds gut microbes. Fermentation produces short-chain fatty acids involved in gut-brain signalling, inflammation, and immune regulation.

A psychobiotic is a gut-microbiome-targeted substance: a probiotic, prebiotic, synbiotic, postbiotic, or certain dietary fibres that may influence mood, stress, or mental wellbeing through the gut-brain axis. Fibre keeps appearing in psychobiotic research because some fibres feed gut bacteria and support the production of short-chain fatty acids, compounds involved in gut-brain communication. Fibre is not a mood treatment, but it may help support one part of the bigger gut-brain wellbeing picture.
What is a psychobiotic?
Every now and then, a science word starts appearing everywhere, and "psychobiotic" is one of them. At first it sounds intense, maybe even a little suspicious: is it a probiotic? Is it for the brain? The simple answer is that a psychobiotic is a gut-microbiome-targeted substance or intervention that may influence brain function, mood, stress, or mental wellbeing through the gut-brain axis. And, like so many gut-health conversations, it brings us back to fibre.
The term was first used in 2013 to describe certain live microorganisms, mainly probiotics that may offer mental-health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts.2 Since then the definition has expanded, and today psychobiotics can include probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics that may influence the brain through gut microbes.2 In plain terms: a probiotic is a live microorganism that may provide a health benefit; a prebiotic is a food source for beneficial gut microbes; a synbiotic combines the two; and a postbiotic is a beneficial compound produced by microbes. So "psychobiotic" does not only mean "good bacteria for your mood," it can also mean feeding your existing gut bacteria in a way that supports gut-brain communication. Which is exactly where fibre comes in.
How does the gut-brain axis work?
The gut-brain axis is the two-way communication system between the gut and the brain. It involves gut microbes, microbial metabolites, immune signalling, hormones, the vagus nerve, and other neural pathways.1,2 In simple terms, the gut does not just digest food, it also sends information. That does not mean the gut "controls" what we feel; mental health is complex, and no single food, fibre, or probiotic can replace proper care. But the gut may be one part of the bigger picture. Why does fibre keep appearing in psychobiotic research?
Dietary fibre is not digested the way protein, fat, or simple carbohydrates are. Instead, certain fibres travel through the digestive system to the large intestine, where gut microbes ferment them into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs): acetate, propionate, and butyrate.1,2 These compounds are being studied because they may help support gut-barrier function, immune regulation, inflammation control, metabolic health, and gut-brain signalling.1,2
This is why fibre is increasingly described as a psychobiotic, not because fibre is a mood treatment or a replacement for mental-health care, but because it feeds the microbial system that helps produce some of the compounds involved in gut-brain communication.
Does the science actually back this up?
The science is exciting, but still evolving. A systematic review on the gut-microbiota-brain axis found that psychobiotics, especially dietary fibres and certain Lactobacillus probiotics, may improve some cognitive outcomes and reduce cortisol response in some studies.1 Another review highlighted SCFA-producing bacteria as a potential source of psychobiotics, because SCFAs may help mediate communication between the gut and brain.2
But "potential" is the key word. The human evidence is still developing, and different studies use different fibres, probiotics, doses, populations, and outcome measures, which makes simple claims hard. A lack of strong evidence does not always mean something is untrue, sometimes it just means the high-quality research has not been done yet. So rather than treating psychobiotics as a miracle fix, it is more accurate to think of them as one part of a broader wellbeing foundation.
What did the "Gut Feelings" trial find?
One of the most interesting human studies is a 2023 Australian randomised controlled trial called Gut Feelings, which compared a high-prebiotic diet, probiotic supplements, synbiotics, and placebo in adults with moderate psychological distress and low prebiotic-food intake.3 After eight weeks, the high-prebiotic diet reduced total mood disturbance compared with placebo, with improvements also noted in anxiety, stress, and sleep. Strikingly, the probiotic supplement alone did not show the same clear effect on mood, and the synbiotic combination did not appear to add benefit.3
This does not mean probiotics are useless, it means the answer is more nuanced than "take a probiotic and feel better." The researchers suggested the prebiotic diet may have helped not only because of prebiotics, but because people ate more fibre-rich plant foods and improved their overall diet quality, taking in a broader mix of fibres, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals.3 That makes sense: the gut does not experience nutrients as isolated marketing claims, it experiences the whole diet.
Why does this matter in real life?
Because most people do not live in a controlled nutrition study, we live in real life: busy mornings, long workdays, stress, poor sleep, quick meals, gut discomfort, budget pressure. Honestly, some days I cannot remember the last time I had a proper lunch break. And when life gets hard, fibre is often one of the first things to drop, we may still eat enough calories, but not enough of the vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains that feed our gut microbes.
That matters because gut microbes rely on what we feed them. A low-fibre diet means fewer fermentable substrates for gut bacteria, which may reduce production of beneficial compounds such as SCFAs.3 That does not mean low fibre causes low mood, but it is a reminder that nourishment is about more than energy.
