Yes, fibre can help with constipation, but the type of fibre, and whether it is practical and realistic to use, matters far more than the amount. The strongest evidence points to psyllium, a gel-forming fibre, when taken at more than 10 grams a day for at least four weeks (which is not really achievable for everyone). And not every fibre works: some fermentable fibres cause gas rather than relief. So let’s look at which types of fibre actually work for constipation.

Does fibre actually help constipation?

For the right fibre, yes. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 randomised controlled trials in 1,251 adults found that 66% of people responded to fibre supplementation compared with 41% on placebo, a 48% higher likelihood of a beneficial response (RR 1.48, 95% CI 1.17–1.88).1 The British Dietetic Association’s 2025 dietary guidelines for chronic constipation reached the same overall figure.2

However, the picture is not uniformly positive, though, and that is worth being honest about. A separate meta-analysis found that dietary fibre significantly increased stool frequency but did not produce a clear improvement in stool consistency, overall treatment success, or painful defecation.4 In other words, fibre reliably helps you go more often, but whether it helps everything depends heavily on which fibre you choose and how much you take.

How does fibre actually soften stool?

So how does fibre actually help with constipation? Stool consistency is largely a function of its water content, and small changes make a big difference: liquid stool is about 90% water, soft stool around 77%, formed stool about 75%, and hard stool about 72%. That roughly 18-percentage-point range corresponds to an enormous, around 240-fold, change in stool viscosity.3

So what fibre does is to raise stool water content, in two distinct ways. Coarse insoluble particles (such as coarse wheat bran) mechanically stimulate the gut lining to secrete water and mucus. Gel-forming soluble fibres (such as psyllium) hold water directly and resist the colon’s natural drying-out of stool.3

Which type of fibre is best for constipation?

Among all the fibre, psyllium is the standout. In the BDA guidelines, psyllium was the only fibre to earn a strong recommendation across several outcomes: it increased the number of people who benefited (RR 1.82, 95% CI 1.51–2.20), increased stool frequency (SMD 1.13, 95% CI 0.39–1.88), softened stool consistency (SMD 0.52, 95% CI 0.25–0.78), and reduced the severity of straining (SMD −0.65, 95% CI −0.91 to −0.39).2

To put the frequency effect in context: psyllium increased bowel movements by roughly three per week, which is comparable to (or better than) osmotic and stimulant laxatives at about 2.5 per week. Since a normal range is 3–21 bowel movements per week, an extra three can be enough to normalise things.1

That said, the “best” fibre is not decided only by how effective it is clinically. When we translate research into the real world, we have to think about application through a human lens. That includes whether people can easily fit fibre into their routine, whether they can stick with it consistently enough, and whether they can tolerate the dose. Constipation responds to consistency, not to a single perfect ingredient. So, the right choice balances the evidence with taste, tolerance, and a daily routine you can genuinely sustain without giving up.

How much fibre do you need, and for how long?

Two numbers matter. First, dose: higher doses above 10 g/day significantly improved response to treatment (RR 1.72, 95% CI 1.35–2.18), whereas lower doses at or below 10 g/day did not (RR 1.01).2 Second, time: treatment durations of at least four weeks were needed to reliably improve stool frequency and overall symptoms.1

The guidelines also advise building up gradually rather than jumping to a high dose, and taking fibre with adequate fluid. Both to improve tolerance and to reduce side effects like bloating and wind.2

So, as I keep coming back to, these numbers have to be read through a human lens. Too much fibre brings side effects like digestive discomfort, yet 10 g a day for four weeks simply is not realistic for everyone. The dose that works on paper only helps if it is a dose you can actually live with, which is why comfort and convenience are not luxuries here; they are part of what makes fibre work at all.

Why do some fibres cause gas instead of relief?

Some fibres, particularly highly fermentable ones such as inulin-type fructans and fructo-oligosaccharides, are broken down rapidly by bacteria in the first part of the colon, which produces gas. This is reflected in the research: overall, fibre supplementation significantly worsened flatulence, meaning excess gas was produced (SMD 0.80, 95% CI 0.47–1.13), and the effect was especially pronounced for inulin-type fructans (SMD 0.79, 95% CI 0.44–1.14).1

Could fibre make your constipation worse?

It happens, and once again, it usually comes down to the wrong fibre, too little fluid, or too much too soon. Finely milled insoluble fibres and some fermentable fibres (such as wheat dextrin) can add dry mass without adding water, which can harden stool rather than soften it.3 Fibre also appears to be less helpful in more severe or slow-transit constipation, where it may not be enough on its own.4

So the fix for any kind of fibre is to increase the dose gradually over a few weeks, and pair it with enough fluid.2 Picking a gel-forming fibre like psyllium could also help, but it does come with downsides which we are going to discuss in the next section. If constipation is severe, persistent despite these steps, or accompanied by warning signs such as bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or a sudden change in bowel habit, see a doctor rather than adding more fibre.

Why is psyllium hard to stick to?

Based on the science, psyllium husk works, but it is not effortless to take, for several reasons. First, psyllium husk is only partly fibre, around 58%, so you need close to twice the weight to reach the same fibre intake. Look at the capsule form on the market, and you will find a fairly ridiculous recommendation of around 20 capsules a day to provide about 7 g of fibre. So you would need even more than that to reach 10 g. Secondly, psyllium husk absorbs a lot of water to form its gel, so it has to be stirred into a large volume of liquid (often around three big glasses a day) to stay drinkable, and it is not especially pleasant to drink. On top of that, the research says you have to keep this up for at least four weeks, with a possible increase in gut discomfort, before the benefits show.12

So what are your other options? A fibre that is not too bulky, not unpleasant to drink, and not likely to cause gut discomfort before things improve? Fibre helps constipation when you pick the right one, give it time, and can stick to using it consistently. Among the types studied, psyllium has the strongest evidence, at more than 10 g/day for at least four weeks, built up gradually and taken with fluid.
